As with most Lilian Jackson Braun’s cat-who books, this book doesn’t disappoint. It is funny, however, how much skullduggery goes on in such a small town in the upper midwest “forty miles for nowhere.” There are two murders in this story and lots of fun cat names courtesy of a contest that the main character Qwilleran puts in the local paper he writes for. Qwilleran is the local handsome bachelor millionaire, who’s cats – Koko and Yum Yum (Siamese) – help him with his amateur sleuthing.
The cats get involved in this story, of course, even more so than usual – Koko actually jumps on the bad guy to try to delay his escape. It is all quite fun and especially so if you listen to it. I can’t imagine anyone else reading it besides George Guidall. He is the perfect voice for the story. My daughter has listened or read all Lilian’s cat-who books. I pick one up when I want something light and entertaining, but I’ve got a ways to go to read/listen to them all. There are many! I would recommend them to anyone. They are good for any age.
