Frankenstein Author’s Birthday

Friday was the birthday of the author of Frankenstein, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelly, 1790 – 1851 (born Mary Godwin in London) .

Mary was only 21 when she wrote it. It was published in 1818. I had no idea the story was written by a woman. I have never read it, but I am going to put it on my to read list.

  1. I love a possible story behind this story. What would happen if men obtained control over the only thing women had sole control over (giving life)? It didn’t turn out so well. But such a feminist statement could not be said outright during that oppressive era, so she crafted an outlandish horror story. Men of the time (and since) didn’t get it. Don’t you love it?

Who knows if that’s what Shelly had in mind, but it makes for interesting conjecture…

    • I never thought of that. Oooo, you’re so deep, Lorna!

      • Well, I taught Women’s Studies and it seemed so obvious given the era… 😉
